🎯 Why old words feel like a secret code
⏳ How authors kept it long and… longer
🧩 The trick to unlocking hidden gems
Ah, classic books. Those intimidating bricks on the library shelf with titles like Moby-Dick, Pride and Prejudice, and The Scarlet Letter. They sit there, collecting dust, as if daring you to crack them open and not fall asleep before page three. But why are they so hard to read? Let’s dig in—and don’t worry, I won’t make you read anything in Old English to figure it out.
1. The Words are… Weird
Let’s face it: nobody walks around today saying, “Pray tell, kind sir, dost thou require assistance?” (And if they do, I need to meet them.) Classic books are packed with words that feel like a secret code. Words like "verily" and "hitherto" might as well be ancient runes. But here’s the thing—those words were totally normal back then. Reading a classic is like watching an old-timey movie where everyone has a British accent, even if they’re in America. It takes a little brain rewiring to get used to it.
2. Long Sentences That Never End
Have you ever read a sentence so long you forgot how it started by the time it ended? Welcome to classics! Authors like Charles Dickens and Victor Hugo seemed to think punctuation was optional. But back in their day, people didn’t have TikTok or Netflix. They had time—so much time—to savor every sprawling sentence. For us, speed-reading digital natives, it’s like running a marathon without training.
3. They Were Writing for Different People
Think about what people cared about 200 years ago. No Instagram reels, no Taylor Swift eras, and definitely no memes. People spent hours debating deep philosophical questions like, “What is the meaning of life?” Classic authors wrote for readers who loved heavy moral debates and intricate plots. We, on the other hand, need a snappy hook and a reason not to scroll away in three seconds.
4. They Assume You Know Stuff… That You Don’t
Have you ever read something like, “And so, like Icarus, he flew too close to the sun,” and thought, Who the heck is Icarus? Back in the day, everyone knew their mythology, Bible stories, and historical references. Classics are littered with “inside jokes” for people who lived centuries ago. Don’t feel bad if you don’t get them—it’s like being the new kid at school who missed all the gossip from last year.
5. They’re Not Actually Hard—They’re Just Different
Here’s the truth bomb: classic books aren’t hard to read because you’re bad at reading. They’re hard because they’re from a different time, with different rules, for different people. It’s like visiting a foreign country where everyone drives on the other side of the road. At first, it’s confusing, but once you get the hang of it, you start to see the beauty in their world.
